Dan Gullerud

Marketing Web Developer

About me

Hello, and welcome! ðŸ‘‹

I'm a Front-End professional with an eye for design and an internal drive for marketing. I enjoy collaborating with designers and stakeholders to produce logical and delightful solutions. As a Certified Professional in Web Accessibility (CPWA), I ensure that these experiences are inclusive and painless for every user.

I'm also a husband, a soccer dad, a T-Ball coach, a Niners fan, and as far as I know, a muggle.

Thanks for stopping by. Be sure to add me on LinkedIn!

Q&A

I have found that the title Front-End Web Developer is used to label a rather large spectrum of professionals with varying skills and interests. I have worked with some very talented coders who have very little patience for working with designers and little interest in collaborating with stakeholders. With my design background and creative energy, I bring a hybrid skillset and enjoy the collaboration process. I follow the designer's final output to a tee and respect brand standard guidelines of the organization. I identify as a Marketing Developer because I enjoy the balance of creativity, technicality, and attention to detail required in the role.

For me, it's about allowing the user to interact with the digital experience by whatever method he or she finds to be most efficient. Whether a user is using a switch device out of necessity or a keyboard out of preference, an accessible experience will benefit all users, no matter their abilities.

Being an effective Marketing Web Developer is more than building something to spec and fulfilling the requirements of each project. He or she must go the extra mile and continuously find ways to improve the website. This may include improving page load speed, accessibility, site health (broken links, layout issues, etc.), inbound traffic, bounce rates, and participating in user testing to get firsthand feedback from real users. During my eight years at Esurance, I took ownership of the .com site and strived to improve the site on a regular basis. I also enjoyed building relationships and collaborating with stakeholders, designers, and vendor partners.

I grew up in the Midwest, but I've always had relatives in the Bay Area. After finishing school I drove solo out west to find a job and escape the long winters in Wisconsin. I took the scenic route and camped at nearly ten National Parks along the way.

For Halloween last year my boys wanted to be the characters from the kids show Robocar Poli. I made the costumes out of cardboard wine boxes using a jigsaw, some Velcro, and a lot of hot glue!
